TRAUMATIC STRESS
Intensely frightening and disturbing experiences can have lasting effects on our bodies, our emotions, and our sense of ourselves. Post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is the psychological and physical toll of traumatic stress which affects survivors as well as their families.
Irritability, mood swings, flashbacks, increased startle, avoidance of reminders, and insomnia are common symptoms. Marriages and family relationships often suffer.
Understanding and therapy for traumatic stress has advanced dramatically in the past 25 years. Dr. Kevin has worked with trauma survivors throughout this time and has a strong commitment to understanding, preventing, and treating PTSD.
Here are some key points about PTSD.
- PTSD is your body's and your mind's reaction to an abnormal situation. It is not a sign of weakness. Many people hide their symptoms because of shame or fear of judgment.
- Simple PTSD is caused by one or more discrete traumas such as accidents, crimes, natural disasters. It is more easily identified and usually responds more quickly to therapy if treated soon after the event. Delaying treatment increases the likelihood of chronic problems.
- Complex PTSD is caused by numerous traumas in the more distant past (such as emotional or physical child abuse). People suffering from complex PTSD have long term difficulty managing their feelings and trouble maintaining healthy relationships. Often they do not recognize the traumas which affected them. Progress in dealing with complex PTSD is usually slower.
- Treatment for PTSD begins with thorough diagnosis. Components of treatment include learning to understand symptoms and developing skills to control and transform intense feelings. Talking it through and targeted trauma resolution therapies are often helpful to resolve traumatic memories. Medication with commonly used antidepressants is sometimes helpful in controlling symptoms.
Dr. Kevin has many years experience treating both simple and complex PTSD. He begins with a thorough history and diagnosis and tailors the therapy to the unique needs of each client. He collaborates with psychiatrists or your personal physician when medication is indicated.
