How can I know if someone needs help with post traumatic stress disorder?
Look for any dramatic change in behavior after an incident. Irritability alternating with indifference, marked anxiety, avoidance of reminders of the accident, or obsessive concern with the details of the accident can all occur in trauma victims. Complaints of pain with no apparent physical cause are more frequent in patients with undiagnosed PTSD. Depression or .just not having it together. may also be important cues. Isn't PTSD just a normal reaction to an upsetting life event? Brief disorganization, anxiety, insomnia, and other mild symptoms are normal after a highly stressful or frightening event. But symptoms that disrupt sleep, work, or leisure activities for more than a few days are NOT a normal reaction and treatment is required. What causes PTSD symptoms? Intense emotional and physiological reactions in response to trauma cause measurable changes in brain function. These changes are usually reversible but may be permanent in some cases. Additionally, a life-threatening event strips an individual of his or her sense of safety in the world. It takes time to integrate the traumatic experience into one's way of understanding life. Can PTSD be cured? In many cases, yes. There are effective psychological and medical treatments for PTSD. New treatment modalities are being actively researched. Despite periodic media reports, there are no sure, quick, cures for PTSD. Beginning treatment quickly after a traumatic event speeds recovery. Why should my injured client or patient be assessed immediately? Early identification and treatment of PTSD makes a significant difference in positive outcome. Diagnosis is surer early in the course of the disease. The likelihood of a "cure" for PTSD decreases over time as patients develop habitual avoidance and adapt to their disabilities. Those individuals who do not need extensive treatment will benefit from education, support, and an opportunity to talk about their experience. Is there a test that shows if someone does or does not have PTSD? No single procedure can diagnose PTSD. Interview and psychological tests can assess the individual.s life history as well as their cognitive and emotional functioning. In most cases, expensive and lengthily procedures are not necessary before beginning treatment. |
